About Susan

SUSAN ROUNDS has been fortunate to live in many different places. Her father’s career in the Air Force opened her eyes to a bigger world, as did listening to her mother’s stories of growing up in Europe in the romantic city of Breslau in Silesia, once part of the Kingdom of Prussia.

During her childhood, Susan lived in Germany, not once but twice. Her second move was to a small village along the beautiful Bodensee near the Alps where she experienced another culture and learned the language fluently. Exploring Bavaria’s fairytale castles sparked her imagination.

With her family always on the move, she changed schools every year or two. But her lifestyle taught her a love of adventure where she discovered the world of aviation, expanding her travels to Alaska and the South Pacific and Morocco. She didn’t realize she has only two more continents left to explore. Onward!

Susan worked as a Flight Service Manager on the Boeing 747, flying to Hawaii and Nagoya, Japan—the best job she ever had. Click here to read her inspiration for the epic “Queen of the Skies,” the most elegant, and dare say, majestic airplane to ever fly.

As an airline consultant, Susan developed training programs and authored an inflight operations manual which garnered certification from the Federal Aviation Administration. A later venture into destination marketing gave her a creative platform to publish travel articles.

Susan’s passion for historical romance draws on many of her life experiences, inspiring her to write about the enduring power of love. She and her husband have two sons they’re very proud of and call northern California home.

A few things you may not know about me

  • I used to work on an apple farm. A pearl of wisdom I learned – A piece of pie without cheese is like a kiss without a squeeze. Cheddar cheese, and melted please.
  • I parachuted out of an airplane. Once. The jumpmaster opened the door. I grabbed on to the wing strut. Free fall. My harness jolted. I looked up at my parachute. “Holy sh**!” Then I saw majestic Mt. Rainier looming in the distance and opposite, the Seattle skyline. Terrified to awestruck in 5 seconds flat.
  • One of my posh jobs at America West Airlines was working on the tarmac in the Arizona heat. Aircraft tug driver. Baggage loader. Lav dumper extraordinaire. Now you know where that blue juice comes from.
  • I have a passion for geology. Volcanoes. Plate tectonics. Simmering geysers. And the lost continent of Zealandia.
  • I get nervous when exploring underground, but hiking through ancient caverns takes my breath away. Especially when our tour guide sang an Italian operatic love song in the Cathedral Room of Shasta Caverns. Her angelic voice left me teary-eyed.
  • My fave warbird aircraft – the P-51 Mustang. The rumble of those engines makes my heart jump!
  • In another life, I’d be living in the Alps in southern Bavaria. My cottage – King Ludwig’s Neuschwanstein Castle. Did you know there’s a scenic drive through southern Germany called the Romantic Road?
  • I love baseball. I’m a diehard Oakland A’s fan. Sunny Sunday afternoons. Our family tailgating at the Coliseum. The aroma of BBQ, then cheering on our team. It doesn’t get any better than that.
  • I have something in common with author Jane Austen. We’re both INTJ personality types. Only two percent of the population are INTJs, but women are rare, making up only 0.8%.
